TakeItBack.Org

TakeItBack.Org is working with Dakotans for Health (a Midwest health advocacy organization that includesformer North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan as one of its activist members!) to highlight the need to expand Medicaid here in South Dakota.
Our cousin state to the south, Nebraska, just passed a ballot measure last month to expand Medicaid, which is expected to provide healthcare insurance and services to an additional 90,000 Nebraskans.

In 2014, our cousin state to the north, North Dakota, with bipartisan support mind you, agreed to expand Medicaid as well, extending healthcare insurance and coverage to an additional 22,000 North Dakotans.

With 37 states, along with the District of Columbia, now part of the Medicaid expansion program of the Affordable Care Act – and with South Dakota becoming increasingly surrounded by states as red as ours who have moved forward with Medicaid expansion -- it seems that the time has come to let the voters decide whether or not they want to expand Medicaid and insure upwards of 55,000 of our fellow citizens access to healthcare.
THE ARGUMENTS TO EXPAND MEDICAID IN SOUTH DAKOTA ARE STUNNINGLY COMPELLING:
-
$2.1 billion in federal healthcare funding
-
$9.81 return for every $1.00 South Dakota contributes
-
$1.383 billion net to our state’s economy
-
Expanded coverage for 55,000 South Dakotans
-
29,500 new jobs
-
Fewer hospital and nursing home closings
Expanding Medicaid is really a ‘no brainer’ if you set aside the politics and look at the numbers – something our legislature appears incapable of doing. This shouldn’t be about politics – it should be people.
So now comes the hard part….

With the recent efforts by the South Dakota Legislature to make it more difficult to qualify a ballot initiative – and recently passed ballot measures that limit out of state financial support, your support is going to be critical if such an effort is to move ahead.

So it is important to let us know if you would support an effort to expand Medicaid in South Dakota by simply replying to this email– and if you can make a small contribution to help with some of the initial setup costs like legal fees, research, drafting – we would certainly appreciate the support by clicking on the button below and making a contribution.

Despites some of the recent polling showing that a super majority of South Dakotans (81% in one poll) support Medicaid expansion, this is going to be uphill fight – but with Medicaid expansion victories in Nebraska, Utah and Idaho this year, three very red states, we have an opportunity to help tens of thousands of South Dakotan who currently don’t have the healthcare coverage get the coverage they need.
Sincerely,
